Grand Cayman Diving - Shore Diving, Reefs & Wrecks
You need look no further than the beach directly adjacent to the Avalon Condominiums to shore dive and observe colorful fish and interesting reef formations. Look for darker areas of the water, which usually denote reef structures below that will make for more interesting shore diving.
Choose between a guided dive or a buddy dive during reef or wreck diving - a buddy dive allowing you to pursue your individual interests at your own pace. During your Grand Cayman diving adventures along the sandy bottoms of reefs or beside wrecks, you may encounter conch, flounder, garden eels and hermit crabs. Small holes & crevices frequently house eel, shrimp, crab, octopus and lobster. Look for outcroppings and overhangs to swim under - they are usually occupied by tarpon, grouper, silverside and numerous species of fish that prefer shade. Shine your light along the top and inside walls to reveal sponges, corals, algae and tunicates in a sparkling array of vibrant colors. Tube sponges are often home to tiny shrimp and goby fish.
Grand Cayman Night Diving
Night diving on the island unveils the mystique of creatures usually hidden or dormant during the day. All qualified dive operators offer Cayman night dives from the boat or shore, and the value of a highly experienced dive master cannot be understated, as he or she will point out all of the most important features during your night dive.
Grand Cayman Snorkeling - Shore Snorkeling, Stingray City & Sandbar
The Avalon Condominiums is located on famous Seven Mile Beach, and our villas are a beautiful, convenient, and serene place for a Grand Cayman snorkeling holiday. Just steps from your ocean view villa, enjoy shore snorkeling along the protected shoreline.
There are also two Stingray City sites in Grand Cayman (one is referred to as Sandbar); both sites are ideal for Grand Cayman snorkeling or diving and are located in the shallow waters of Cayman Islands’ tranquil North Sound off Rum Point. Stingray City locations were inadvertently created in the mid 1980’s as fishermen returning to port anchored in the calm waters of the sound to clean their catch, casting bait overboard. Southern Stingrays, who hunt by sense of smell, quickly discovered these new ‘restaurants’ where they now dine primarily on handouts of squid provided by divers and snorkelers.
Stingray City averages 12 feet in depth, while Sandbar is slightly shallower with depths ranging from 3-10 feet. Collectively, these locations are frequented by 30-40 friendly stingrays every day - stingrays that are eager to make your acquaintance and find out what you brought for them to eat.
If ever there was a true "must-do" for water enthusiasts, Stingray City is it!
Alluring Fishing Adventures - The Big Catch
Often considered the unofficial “national sport” of the Cayman Islands, sport fishing procures year-round prized gamefish, such as blue marlin, tuna, wahoo, and dolphin, although there are distinct fishing seasons for each popular species.
The Cayman Islands are renowned for fantastic deep sea fishing, reef fishing and drift fishing, and thrilling adventures can be booked through one of the many charter companies operating on Grand Cayman. Alternatively, you can take a short drive up to Breakers for a little fly fishing.
